Teach Children Respect For God

Most Christian parents look to Colossians 3:20 as a reference for teaching children that it is God’s will they respect their parents. I’ll have to admit that I certainly did.

I used to gather my three children together two or three times a week, sit them down and begin my Bible lessons. During my question and answer session I always got blank stares, especially from my 4 year old. It took a little time for me to realize that children learn about the things of God best by precept and example. Also children learn differently at different stages of their growth.

This was especially true for teaching my children from Colossians 3:20: Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.  Children learn honor and respect of their parents in different stages.

And also: Ephesians 6:1-3: Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

These two character qualities of obeying and honoring parents are vital to pleasing God. But it is important to understand that obedience has to do with an outward act, while honoring has to do with an inward attitude of the heart. This cannot be taught just by reading a lesson as I tried to do.

Teach Children Respect For God Daily

I realized that as parents, we need to help our children learn how to respect us by teaching them how to have an inward obedience as well as an outward obedience. This means a consistent discipline that teaches children how to not be inwardly disrespectful.

For instance a child might do what you say, but all the while saying to his or herself, “I hate her, I hate her, I hate her! I will do what I want as soon as I get a chance.” This is a rebellious nature and it must be dealt with in every child to help them respect their parents, authority and most important, God.

Believe it or not, we can teach children respect inwardly as well as outwardly. There is more to just giving a child a “time out,” moment. When you hear them complaining and threatening to do what they want, you need to deal with their attitudes as well. This will build their characters and it will help them to grow a positive respect for you.

It will help to read Bible verses and pray with them.  Paraphrasing verses in a way they can understand will be helpful for younger children and Bible versions can be helpful too.

I suggest being firm, but loving. Don’t be afraid to hug your child and say you love them after you have enforced and reinforced a lesson you’re trying to teach. Our God is a God of love, so we have to teach our children about that love and how to use it for others by giving it freely to them.  Our children learn about God’s love by the love we give them.

If you are a parent, it is critical for you to deal just as swiftly with a disrespectful attitude as it is with a disobedient act. It is part of your God-given role of teaching your children obedience and respect for authority.

As your children learn how to obey and respect, you will not only bring them peace, they will experience God’s blessing in their lives and the assurance of a long life (Ephesians 6:1-3).

So as you raise your children to be the people God desires them to be, make it a priority of teaching your children the qualities of respect for authority and obedience. Someday they will bless you for it!

Guidelines To Help You Teach Children Respect For God Inwardly and Outwardly

  • Let your children know from little that they must respect you and other adults (those who can be trusted or who don’t hurt them)
  • Show respect for your spouse, others and them (great examples for them to follow)
  • Respect yourself so that they will learn how to feel good about themselves
  • Most important, show them your respect for God.
  • Keep God’s love in your life, your home and even in your discipline!
