Cultivate God’s Mercy To Initiate God’s Blessings
People believe that Luke 6:38 has to do with money and financial opportunity only, but for Christians, we are told in the Bible to think beyond material goods and look inward to make the changes needed to be like Christ.
It’s because of the changes we make in our hearts that God is able to provide us with His blessings. This is not because of what we do. Nothing we ever do could be good enough to receive from God. We receive blessings because of and through Jesus Christ, so it’s because of Jesus that we are good enough to receive anything from God.
Because of Jesus Biblical principles for financial growth, material goods, good health, joy, peace, safety, protection and whatever we need will work on our behalf to manifest these blessings in our lives.
Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
However, it’s not unusual to hear this verse used in connection with giving money to the Lord’s work. And while there is a principle concerning money embedded in this verse, Jesus was not talking about giving an offering for the sake of receiving a return when He made this statement. That was not the subject under discussion.
In order to understand what He was really talking about, you need to read verses 35-37,
“But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”
Jesus was actually making the point that when each of us forgives, gives love and mercy, we will receive them in good measure, pressed down, shaken together. By the same measure that we give these expressions of God to others we will get back love, kindness, compassion, mercy! Just like a “boomerang effect” they come right back to us.
Understand God’s Mercy
And as I said, through our obedience to God by sharing His love with others, we can expect a return on our giving. Because of God’s mercy to sacrifice His Son for the world, we can expect increase in every area of our lives.
This is a principle, but it’s usually taken out of context by people thinking that all they have to do is give money and they will get more back in return. Operating in God’s Word by this premise puts us in a position of obeying God’s Word to get something, not to obey God out of reverence and love.
It’s also important to note what happens when we give the opposite of God’s love. If we measure out judgment and condemnation, we can expect to receive the same measure back. So when Christians are having a hard time, guess whose fault it is? God’s? The worlds? Anybody that doesn’t like you?
Of course you know the answer! We are all in complete control of what happens to us. So if you are experiencing harsh judgement or a lack of kindness and mercy, don’t look any farther than your own heart.
Today, begin looking though the New Testament and learn more about God’s mercy and love for you. Then begin practicing it on others! Once you do this, you’ll be receiving back the same! Make a commitment this minute to become a person of God’s mercy, not seeking anything in return. Become known as someone who reflects our God of mercy to a broken and needy world.
