What Does Growing Up Spiritually Mean and Do For Christians?
Before we can consider growing up spiritually, we need to know what behaviors are scripturally wrong and what behaviors are scripturally acceptable. Knowing the difference gives knowledge and wisdom for spiritual growth to lead a Godly life.
Galatians 5:15-26 gives us the “bad” and the “good” so to speak as Godly principles to follow over worldly behaviors which can bring harm to the soul and the spirit, resulting in unnecessary problems. Many Christians can avoid much of the pain and harm that general living can bring, by following Godly principles.
The “bad” actions listed in Galatians 5:15-21 below are those which wound the soul and taint the heart. When these behaviors are acted out on a consistent basis, they harm the person doing them and other persons close to them.
Now, if you’re not a Christian, what I’ve just said won’t have meaning for you because you’re not a believer. But Christians are blessed with the ability to become transformed in Christ so that they can follow Him with signs following. They should find this a privilege and not something that will keep them from living the same life from before they were saved.
Mark 16:20 (ASV) 20. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.
The “Godly” actions given us in Galatians 22-26 will produce fruit from the human spirit that grows when cultivated by faith in God’s Word and prayer. The fruit of the human spirit will bring God’s life to the human soul to desire living God’s way. Also, the fruit of the spirit shines brightly upon those near the person who has chosen to live God’s Word over the world’s values which I’ve already said corrode or corrupt the soul and taint the heart.
SAY OUT LOUD, “THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS! THANK YOU LORD!”
The Guide For Growing Up Spiritually
So here we have the answer to growing up spiritually. We must overcome the sins from Galatians 5:15-21 with the fruit of the spirit from Galatians 5:22-26.
Galatians 5:15-26 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
KEEP THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT GROWING
Contrary to what many Christians think, God is not responsible for our spiritual growth–we are! God will empower our ability to learn and grow, but we have to initiate our time with Him in the Word and in prayer.
Many Christians live from one difficulty to another. They are sick, afraid, without money and they are always looking to others to help them get through life and wondering why God isn’t helping them.
If you’ve just been saved or you have just begun to read the Bible, you need to spend time growing your spirit. While we should always learn more about the Bible and God’s will for our lives, it is important to take the time to develop our spirits which will ultimately retrain our minds to God’s thoughts or successful Godly thinking (Romans 12:2). Then when we ask for God’s help, we will know how to receive it.
While this might sound like a huge undertaking, it’s a means of moving forward in life rather than living through one bad experience after another – and it’s really a joy, not a task as we begin to see the amazing changes in our lives by living God’s way rather than by the negative realities many of us were given as children.
You are a “new man” in Christ Jesus. This means that you must feed your heart or spirit a diet of God’s Words for spiritual growth. In time this will transform your mind, and as this process continues you will see the results in everything you do that was difficult or negative in the past.
Growing up spiritually is the result of taking that first step toward God by getting His Word in your heart. It doesn’t matter that you’re just beginning your journey, it only matters that you begin. Once you do, your life will never be the same.
